Having a special room to enjoy your hobby and do your crafts has a lot of advantages. For one, it creates a personal space within which you can flourish, let your creativity go free and enjoy yourself. Secondly, it helps make organization easier and avoid creating a mess in other parts of the house. But setting up and maintaining a crafts room can be a headache. You need to ensure that the work area is bright and comfortable and that everything is well arranged and easy to find. You will be able to focus on exuding your creativity rather than overturning the room to find items.
1. Let in lots of natural light
There is nothing worse for a craft room than lack of proper lighting. It dulls creativity and you will find yourself looking for reasons not to go in there. If you are planning to turn a room into a hobby room, the first thing is to ensure that there is lots of natural light. If the window is too small, talk with a contractor about widening it and in some cases you can even get a skylight fitted on the roof.
As for artificial light, LED lighting is best. It is bright enough and uses less energy than traditional lighting. Have some extra overhead lights near your working surfaces.
2. Get more storage
You will hate working in a place where everything is cluttered and you have to wade through piles to find what you want. To keep everything in place, increase your storage. Get a container to store your equipment especially the large ones. Make sure your working desk has drawers to store smaller stuff. For tiny objects like ribbons and screws use something like muffin tins or a pillbox. You can add more shelves to a wall to store extra supplies. The most important thing is to ensure that there is nothing lying about in a disorganized manner.
3. Have a large working surface
Most crafts need a large working surface. Whatever table you go for, make sure it is sturdy and large enough for your projects. Try not to clutter the table with too many things. Clutter can have a negative mental effect on you. You also add an extra working surface on the other end of the room in the event you need to carry out two projects or one big one.
4. Have a waste basket or two
You are going to rack up a lot of trash. Just letting it lying around or throwing it into a corner is going to create a whole lot of an uncomfortable mess. Near your work station, you should have at least two waste paper baskets. It will help keep the place clean as you work.
5. Have materials that are easy to clean
A lot of craft work is messy and inevitably, things around the room are going to get dirty. This includes the carpet, floor, working desk and even your clothes. Make sure that these things can be easily cleaned.
Setting up the ideal crafts room is a lot of work and you need to put your organizations skill to work. In the end however you will find that it was highly worth the effort.
