6 Tips To Maintain Oriental Rugs

Buying an oriental rug for the home is an investment. And though the rug can add beauty to the interiors, it can quickly fade away if you do not take good care of it. Below, we will look at six simple ways to ensure that the rug you buy always remains in the best possible condition.

Keep It Away From Sunlight

When you keep handmade oriental rugs exposed to sunlight for long periods of time, the natural dye in the rug will fade away. As a consequence, the rug will lose its luster and look rather jaded and old. This is why it is important that you place the rug away from sunlight. And in case the rug has to be placed near windows through which sunlight streams in, try to keep the windows partially close during daytime to prevent the sunlight from falling on to the rug.

Regular Vacuum Cleaning

It is inevitable that the rug will have dust buildup due to people walking all over it. As such, you must always vacuum the rug, preferably on a daily basis. Doing so will ensure that dust does not accumulate on the surface of the rug, grind on to its fibers and damage it quickly.

Rotate The Rug

If the rug is kept in the exact same position for a long time, it is natural that some portions of the rug will be excessively worn out because of people constantly rubbing their feet on it. This can make the rug look deformed, as one side will look decent while the other side will look torn and damaged. To prevent this, you should rotate the rug once every two months. Doing so will ensure that the wear and tear are distributed evenly across the rug.

Dry It In The Open

Over time, the rug will attract moisture. It can be due to people rubbing their wet feet on it, liquid falling onto the surface and so on. However it may be, if you let the moisture settle on the rug continuously, then it is inevitable that it will be damaged. To avoid this, place the rug under the sun in the open for a few hours once every two months. This should evaporate the trapped moisture and also help in getting rid of the smell.

Use Padding

It is also advisable that you always use padding beneath the rug. This will not only help in keeping the rug stabilized and in good shape but will also ensure that it does not get too affected by the wrinkles. As a result, the rug will remain in good condition for longer periods.

Professional Cleaning

In addition to the regular care and cleaning done by you, try to get the rug cleaned by professional rug cleaners. They have the full know-how of the ways to take better care of the rug and can even restore its natural fibers. Professional cleaning can be done once every three years or so.
